Kostic Suffers Potential Ligament Injury During Serbia’s Loss to England

Serbia’s flank defender, Filip Kostic, is suspected to have sustained severe ligament injuries during a disappointing 1-0 loss to England at Euro 2024, disclosed by coach Dragan Stojkovic.

England clinched their initial victory of the Group C contest on Sunday, thanks to Jude Bellingham’s pivotal early header in a tense matchup in Gelsenkirchen.

A clash with Bellingham led to Kostic’s premature exit; the Juventus stalwart needed urgent care after a rough tumble and was sidelined just before halftime.

Now facing matchups with Slovenia and Denmark, Serbia feels the sting of Kostic’s uncertain future in the tournament, with a prolonged recovery looming.

“Kostic complained of severe discomfort on the external section of his left knee, raising fears of ligament trauma,” Stojkovic conveyed after the game. “Diagnostic tests scheduled for Monday will clarify the extent of his injury.”

Despite England restricting Serbia to a mere six attempts at goal and a paltry 0.18 expected goals (xG), Stojkovic argued his side merited at least a draw.

“We boxed in the Brits effectively and undeservedly walked away empty-handed,” Stojkovic remarked.

“I lauded the squad for their spirited effort,” he continued. “Now, we redirect our focus to the crucial upcoming clash against Slovenia.”
