The Harmattan period could increase the number of cases

In Burkina Faso, the number of active cases is 399 in eleven regions of the country. A number rising given the numbers for the past two weeks, according to the coordinator of the Operations Center for Response to Health Situations. Burkinabè will have to learn to live with Covid-19, but above all pay extra attention to respect for barrier movements. And the Harmattan period with its dry wind is not meant to improve the situation.

Last week, the country registered 93 cases. This week there are 46 new positive cases. According to Dr. Brice Bicaba, head of the Health Emergency Response Center, Burkina Faso is at about the same level as in April last year, at the time of the peak of the disease. Thus, Covid-19 wins place.

“Overall, the number of cases has increased. We also noted that the reproduction rate of the epidemic is 1, indicating that we are moving towards an endemic trend. So we need to have a Covid fund for a while. Bobo-Dioulasso is still the city most affected, ”he explains.

What worries the coordinator of the reaction more in terms of health is the coming weeks. Harmattan and its dry wind set in. In addition, the election campaign for the presidential and legislative elections is announced.

“Climate factors are in favor of a development, at least in terms of an increase in the number of cases, because during this period a dry wind blows, which dries up and weakens the mucous membranes. And therefore we could really see an increase in the number of cases, ”he added.

Pending the drafting of directives that will be presented to the various political leaders on the behavior to be adopted during these periods, the coordinator of the response urges the peoples to strictly respect the barrier measures against Covid-19.
