OIC Summit Commences in Gambia with Emphasis on Gaza
OIC Summit: Unity, Culture, and Critical Resolutions in Banjul
The 15th gathering of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) commenced in Banjul, the heart of Gambia, on Saturday. The focal point of this summit is the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.
The summit, drawing leaders from the 57 nations that comprise the OIC, alongside global dignitaries, promises considerable attendance. Representing Türkiye is Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, per a pre-summit announcement from the OIC.
“The summit’s primary aim is to forge stronger bonds among the member states,” remarked a spokesperson, underscoring the essence of collective action in tackling pressing issues while bolstering cooperation and solidarity, as outlined in the organization’s charter.
Moreover, the gathering is set to highlight economic growth within member states, with particular focus on small and medium enterprises. An equally significant agenda item is showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Gambia and Africa to a global audience.
Scheduled to continue through Sunday, the summit hinges on the theme: “Enhancing Unity and Solidarity through Dialogue for Sustainable Development.” Key topics include the Palestinian situation and the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has tragically claimed over 34,000 lives.
Central to the discussions will be three pivotal documents: a draft resolution on Palestine, a draft Banjul statement, and the summit’s final document. These will be tabled before the Council of Foreign Ministers before reaching the summit floor.
