native elections postponed once more

In Senegal, local elections have been postponed again. This was registered in the Council of Ministers on Wednesday 25 March. The municipalities and departments should in principle be held before 28 March. This is the third launch and no new date has been set.

as reported from Dakar, Charlotte idrac

It was expected, so it’s now official. The bill on postponement of local elections adopted by the Council of Ministers, it must now go through the Assembly. Consequence: the mandate for the department and municipal council – mainly from the majority – is extended again.

Why a new launch? “We have to wait for the end national dialogue», Explains a source from the government, this dialogue that was initiated by the head of state in May 2019. On the table, above all, the evaluation of the election process and the review of the matter, which began last month.

Goal 2022?

So when will these elections be held? According to the majority representatives in the dialogue, the evaluation of the process can only begin on April 1 and it will take 11 months, technically, before the premises are organized, which would lead to 2022. This raises the question of a possible link to the legislative elections planned for that year.

For its part, the opposition, represented by the national resistance front, maintains its position and demands that local elections be held at the end of the year. In a press release, the FRN condemns “administrative delays” which are “sole responsibility of the government”.
