Concerns about the future of Burkina Faso’s forests

Every year, the country loses about 247,000 hectares of forest. A very worrying situation according to the Ministry of the Environment that requires a change in behavior. In connection with the international tree fair that is currently taking place in Ouagadougou, specialists explain to the population the various techniques for preserving nature.

as reported from Ouagadougou, Yaya Boudani

Extensive agriculture, coal production for cooking and the search for gold are the most important factors in the destruction of forests in Burkina Faso. These three factors alone destroy about 80% of the environment, according to Bertrand Tapsoba, chief inspector for water and forests, and director of forestry and forest replanting. “As it goes along, Burkina Faso risks being confronted with the difficulties associated with climate change, which will have repercussions on our local populations. If there are no more trees, there is no more life. But people have not found out yet. ”

For the Burkina Ecological Movement, which organizes awareness sessions on the theme of “trees and the restoration of the Sahel’s ecosystem”, the tree must be at the heart of all problems. “To reverse the trend, we must try to move the tree as an ally in ecological creation that enables humanity not only to survive but also to have a healthy environment. This will lead players to see that in order to restore our ecosystems, we cannot do so without trees, explains Rodrigue Ilou, General Coordinator of the International Tree Fair.

The Ministry of the Environment has already planned to launch the campaign “a Burkinabè, a tree” during these school weekends. Every Burkinabé must commit to planting and maintaining at least one tree.
