Backlash Escalates Against Liberia’s Newly Appointed Elections Chief

Concerns are rising regarding the appointment of Jonathan K. Weedor as the chairperson of the National Elections Commission, as opposition leaders and civil society organizations voice their objections. They argue that Weedor’s previous endorsements of the ruling Unity Party raise significant doubts about his impartiality in this critical role.

“He brings extensive expertise in electoral management to the table,” commented Anderson Miamen, director of the Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia. “However, his independence—a crucial aspect—is questionable.” Similarly, Naymote Partners for Democratic Development emphasized that the electoral process should be overseen by individuals who exhibit both sound judgment and credibility.

The discontent is primarily fueled by a widely shared video clip in which Weedor expressed support for then-candidate Joseph Boakai while also making a prediction about the election that turned out to be incorrect.
