The words of a Moroccan official on

Algiers has decided to recall its ambassador to Rabat for consultation. While the two countries are in conflict with the issue of Western Sahara, Algeria has not at all appreciated the Moroccan ambassador’s withdrawal from the UN on the right of self-determination for the Kabyle people.

It was during a virtual meeting with non-aligned countries that took place in New York on 13 and 14 July that Omar Hilale, the Moroccan ambassador to the UN, handed over to the member states a note in which he believes that the Kabyle people in Algeria deserve “more than someone else to fully enjoy their right to self-determination “. A statement that did not taste at all to the Algerian power.

Algeria opposes any desire for independence in Kabylia. It also classified the Kabylia Self-Determination Movement (MAK) as a “terrorist organization” in May last year. Kabylia, located in the north of the country and mainly Amazigh, forms a red line for Algiers, as well as Western Sahara for Morocco.

This is the first time a Moroccan diplomat has officially expressed support for Kabylia’s separatism in response to Algiers’ support for Sahrawi separatists. An answer also, according to Rabat, to statements by Ramtane Lamamra, Algeria’s Foreign Minister, on Western Sahara, during this meeting with non-adapted countries concerned with health.

Ramtane Lamamra called for support for the right to self-determination for the Saharawi people and quickly appointed a new special envoy for this conflict.
