Algiers has decided to recall its ambassador to Rabat for consultation. While the two countries are in conflict with the issue of Western Sahara, Algeria has not at all appreciated the Moroccan ambassador’s withdrawal from the UN on the right of self-determination for the Kabyle people.

Algeria opposes any desire for independence in Kabylia. It also classified the Kabylia Self-Determination Movement (MAK) as a “terrorist organization” in May last year. This is the first time a Moroccan diplomat has officially expressed support for Kabylia’s separatism in response to Algiers’ support for Sahrawi separatists.
