Somalia’s political leaders should cling standoff talks ahead of the election

MOGADISHU, Somalia – As part of efforts to harmonize some of the proposals for the election model, Somalia’s stakeholders are expected to meet on Tuesday for a meeting that is expected to even out most of the differences.

Several sources tell Axadlethat there have been consultations on the status of outgoing presidential participation, whose term expired on February 8, and whether to include other interested parties who have not been invited.

For Farmajo, the organizers are confused about whether to let him in as the country’s president or presidential candidate in the upcoming election. His critics want him to run for president as his term expires.

And the team is also juggling proposals on whether the opposition team should be allowed, which has pushed for change in the country. The team is led by former Presidents Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

Jubaland President Ahmed Madobe said Somalia’s electoral process always needed the support of international partners who invested heavily in state-building. The partners are credited for the milestone achieved so far in the Horn of Africa.

Prior to Tuesday’s meeting, there have been various formal gatherings, including those involving the five federal heads of state who have found a common solution to the current electoral death in the country.

Somalia was first set to hold elections in December last year, but the process is deliberately delayed after the current administration did not implement the agreement on September 17 before the elections, which had provided a framework for the elections.
