Somalia writes to the UNSC after the standoff talks before the election flopped

MOGADISHU, Somalia – In the midst of the ongoing stalemate before the Somali elections, the federal government has written to the United Nations Security Council [UNSC], in response to a recent meeting of the Council on the security and stability of the country.

Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, United States Representative to the United Nations and President-in-Office of the Security Council in March, had outlined some of the important recommendations on Somalia while calling for tolerance.

In a letter from the State Department, the federal government praised the continued support of the UNSC, adding that the country has made tremendous progress due to the commitment of the UN and other partners.

The UN, Somalia said, has consistently respected the country’s “territorial integrity and sovereignty” even amid endless strife ranging from political to security-related issues, making it nearly impossible for the country to move forward.

But without mentioning anyone, Somalia raised questions of “external actors” in hell to undermine the country’s sovereignty and independence, adding that such a move was “unacceptable” and would not be tolerated at any cost.

Further, Mogadishu called the election “national exercises” to be conducted by “national institutions”, adding that it is committed to ensuring that the country goes to the polls. It said the agreement on September 17 before the election and the Baidoa recommendations will be backed up unconditionally.

The statement comes days after the federal government claimed talks in Mogadishu had collapsed, adding that Jubaland and Northeastern State were responsible for the stalemate. However, the two states have described FGS as “hypocritical” and vowed to push for the talks.

In response to a statement from Mogadishu Mayor Omar Filish, Jama Deperani, Northeastern State’s spokesman, said: “I am very sorry and it is unfortunate to hear Filish say that Northeastern State and Jubaland have said that the government. must be dissolved! This information is not responsible and is a blatant lie! The discussion was the agenda! “.
