Regardless of variations, optimism registered in Somalia turned into not easy
Despite differences, optimism was recorded in Somalia’s difficult political talks
MOGADISHU, Somalia – There has been some optimism in Somalia’s ongoing negotiations in Mogadishu, and the international community continues to put pressure on various actors who have pulled the country back and forth in the midst of stalemate before the election.
Leaders from all member states, the opposition and the federal government of Somalia have been meeting in Halane Base Camp for over a week now, but the talks have been marred by suspicion from both sides of the political divide.
On Monday [today], talks with leaders from the five states, the international partners began talks in Halane Base Camp in order to resolve differences involving Northeastern State President Said Abdullahi Deni, his Jubaland counterpart Ahmed Madobe and Farmajo.
International partners pay tribute to the FMS’s efforts to find a way out and compromise the unprecedented electoral and political crisis in Somalia and continue talks on peaceful elections after attending today’s meeting.
The presidents of the Southwest, Hirshabelle and Galmudug have warned outgoing President Farmajo against extending the time, saying they will not be a party to such an illegal movement. Originally confirmed to Garowe Online.
The firm stance of these presidents and the pressure of the international community addressed the planned parliamentary session to discuss and adopt an extension of the mandate of the government.
In fact, the current stalemate is constructed by opposition from Deni and Madobe, who accuse Farmajo of running the country as his “personal property”. The most important stumbling block now is said to be the safety of the room.
With mistrust, there is a chance that all sides will not be under the same tent until the day of signing the agreement – that is, if the room for security solution is resolved. Sources, however, suggest that there is a slight optimism compared to 48 hours ago
Earlier Sunday, the leaders of the five federal member states of Somalia convened their third meeting in Halane, Mogadishu, and held consultations with northern politicians led by Senate Speaker Abdi Hashi as they seek a common position before attending the Afisyoni conference.
Later Sunday night, Farmajo, the presidents of Galmudug, Hir Shabelle, Southwest, Prime Minister Mohamed Roble and the governor of Banadir held a meeting in Villa Somalia. The team faces opposition from the opposition, Jubaland and Northeastern State.
The presidents of the three states are said to have shared with Farmajo what they had agreed with the presidents of Northeastern State and Jubaland over the past two days as the country struggles to find a lasting solution to the current electoral death.
Among the topics it is said that they have discussed suspicion that the federal government lower house will make an illegal extension and the next meeting between the five FGS presidents and Farmajo.
