Confusion over the arrival of the Russian vaccine
In Kenya, there is confusion about the Russian vaccine Sputnik V. A few days after the first injections in the country, the vaccination was stopped. The Kenyan government mentions in particular the lack of permission to use the serum.
Since mid-March, 75,000 Sputnik V vaccines have arrived on Kenyan soil via a private company. 228 people even received a first injection in clinics. They had to pay about sixty euros per dose.
But the government does not want it … He argues that Sputnik V has not been given the necessary authorizations for its use. The WHO has not yet given its approval, even though its effectiveness is 91%, according to a study from the medical journal The Lancet.
Target 1 million vaccinated in June
The second problem is that the country’s official vaccination campaign will offer free injections to the entire population. The arrival of the vaccine via private circles therefore reveals problems of inequality. Finally, on April 2, the Ministry of Health banned all sales and imports of vaccines from private companies in Kenya. The risk of counterfeiting is too high, he says.
But wouldn’t Kenya need these doses of vaccine? The government’s goals are clear … It wants to vaccinate more than a million people by June. But at present, almost 340,000 people have been vaccinated in the country. They received doses of AstraZeneca. Everything is delivered thanks to Covax’s international aid program.
