strong tensions in Goma in northern Kivu

At least seven people have been killed and 22 injured in and around Goma in violence following protests against insecurity in northern Kivu province. This violence reached its peak on Sunday and continued on Monday, April 12, on the outskirts of Goma.

The violence began on Sunday, April 11, when two motorcycle taxis were killed by protesters in the Buhene area, in the village of Rukoko. The cyclists were accused of violating the order to stop traffic to demonstrate against insecurity in the region.

The situation degenerated and turned into a quasi-municipal conflict. The incident took place against the background of a latent conflict between two communities as cohabitants in Buhene.

The police tried in vain. Several people were killed by bullets and others by clubs, machetes and other blade weapons. More than twenty injured were also registered. The material fee is also significant. About ten houses were burned down and companies destroyed.

Curfew at 6pm and demonstrations banned in northern Kivu

Scenes of looting have also been reported. On Monday, people living in the Munigi neighborhoods abandoned their homes to take refuge in the southern city districts.

Action has been taken by the Governor of North Kivu, Carly Nzanzu. The curfew, which was introduced as part of the fight against the coronavirus, has been reduced from 21:00 to 18:00 in some of the districts affected by this violence. And demonstrations are now banned throughout the province of North Kivu.
