the opposition condemns a coup
Following the death of Idriss Deby and the establishment of a military council in Chad, a “transitional charter” providing for the repeal of the constitution was published for a few hours on the Presidency’s website before its withdrawal. Sources close to CMT explain that this was not the correct version. On the opposition side, representatives of the main parties met this morning and they condemn a coup.
as reported from Ndjamena, Aurélie Bazzara
Rebellion. The word is taken from about thirty opposition parties, which meet the next day the announcement of Idriss Déby’s death. Small parties participated in this meeting, but also heavyweights, such as the opponent’s Saleh Kebzabo’s party or the Transformers. They condemn a coup because they say it is the son who succeeds the father, both are high-ranking officers. “The role of the military is to ensure border security, not to seize power,” said Mahamat Bichara, a spokesman for this coalition.
A coup also because the National Assembly and the constitution were dissolved while a curfew was introduced. It went from 18.00 to 20.00 in the last press release from Transitional Military Council.
The opposition therefore demands a civilian transition and the beginning of an inclusive dialogue. She fears that Mahamat Idriss Déby will not respect the 18-month transfer and that history will be repeated.
Opponents also demand that an investigation be launched to determine the circumstances of Idriss Deby’s death. They question the official version. “Was he really hurt by an enemy bullet?” FrançoisDjekombé wondered during this meeting, which lasted an hour. Finally, they urge the Chadians not to respect the military council’s decision and threaten a popular uprising.
On the side of MPS, Idriss Deby’s party which is currently in power, we are talking about “a completely flat opposition that is trying to resolve itself with the population”.
