The Constitutional Court on Tuesday, April 6, validated the election of Denis Sassou-Nguesso in the vote on March 21. He received 88.40% of the votes instead of 88.57% of the votes, according to the preliminary results which the court modified somewhat after rejecting the appeals against the annulment of three opponents.

as reported from Brazzaville, Loïcia Martial

The Court’s deliberations were emptied by its President Auguste Iloki after a hearing lasting a few hours. “The candidate Sassou-Nguesso Denis is elected President of the Republic, who won 88.40% of the vote in the first round,” Iloki explained.

Denis Sassou-Nguesso’s lawyer, Me Emmanuel Oko, described his client’s victory as clear and understood first and foremost why the court made some small changes to the results. “You know, small mistakes are never missing. In the beginning it is 88.57%, in the end 88.40%, it is about the same thing, he said.

For his part Me Jean-Philippe Esseau, lawyer for Jean-Jacques Serge Yhombi Opango, ally of Guy-Brice Parfait Kolélas, deceased opponent the day after the vote really bowed to the court’s ruling, but he believes the problem is still unresolved. “Koléla’s deceased, he’s losing his legal personality, so he’s losing his candidate status. Can we pronounce the result of a deceased; by a person who is no longer a candidate ”.

The election conflict was emptied, his victory confirmed Denis Sassou-Nguesso is now waiting for his inauguration for a fourth term in five years with many challenges to overcome.
