Chad’s economic development, a major failure

Financially, Idriss Déby will not go into the history of his country as a great builder, nor a development architect. His country is at the bottom of the world rankings for development. The oil rent that started in 2003 has hardly helped the population.

187 out of 189 countries, this is Chad’s position in the UN ranking for human development. Health, education, standard of living, Chad is far behind. Every fifth child dies there before the age of five and 40% of the survivors are inhibited due to poor nutrition.

In 2003, however, there was hope at the beginning of oil exploitation. Unfortunately, this rent was never properly divided, which also caused a long quarrel between Ndjamena and the World Bank. Oil has even widened the inequality that NGOs complain about. Currently, 42% of Chadians live below the poverty line, according to World Bank.

The second pillar of the economy, cotton, has experienced years of crisis since 1990, before recovering somewhat in 2018 under the impetus of Singaporean Olam, which bought CotonTchad and revived the textile industry. Small sunbeams also for breeding. One of the few sectors in the country that has developed in thirty years. Chad is the third largest producer of beef in Africa.

However, the country is still under-equipped in virtually all areas. The Covid-19 crisis has exacerbated a difficult financial situation. Chad was the first country during the pandemic to ask the IMF to restructure its debt.
