birth of a gorilla in the Kahuzi-Biega Park

On Saturday, August 7, the female Mwinja gave birth to a male baby in the Kahuzi-Biega Natural Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This is Mjinja’s first baby with the male Nabirembo. The populations of lowland gorillas are revived in this region.

On Saturday, August 7, Kahuzi-Biega Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo recorded the birth of a baby gorilla from the eastern plains. The Congolese Kahuzi-Biega National Park, which covers 600,000 hectares, is a sanctuary for this subspecies (also known as Grauer) which is endemic to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to the park’s latest count, 172 individuals often find refuge in this park. It is the largest gorilla in the world. In adulthood, a male can measure up to 1.83 meters and weigh 227 kg.

An improved situation in the parkThe Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation confirms this: Grauer’s gorilla is no longer in danger. This is also observed by Hubert Mulongoy, spokesman for the Kahuzi-Biega park where the gorilla was born. In recent years, the security situation in this region has improved, which has led to a stabilization of the population of this species.

But it has been a long time. Hubert Mulongoy realizes that “the Kahuzi-Biega Natural Park has gone through many problems since 2018, until the beginning of 2021, with indigenous peoples and inhabitants.[du fait] conflicts that existed in the park ”. The end of the violence is therefore “a sign of hope” for the park, which wants to be removed from the UNESCO World Heritage List in danger. The spokesman notes that “there are hardly any more conflicts, we have good relations with the natives and the inhabitants and it is now a birth”. For the park, “this agreement [peut faire] hope for an increase in gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega ”.

But one species is still threatened on a global scaleHowever, Grauer’s gorilla is still one of the most endangered gorilla species. The Wildlife Conservation Society estimates that there are 3,800 individuals left in the world. According to data analyzed by NGO 2016, this species would have suffered a 77% decrease in the number of individuals between 1990 and 2016.
