Batshuayi joins Besiktas on loan after signing Chelsea extension
Michy Batshuayi has extended his contract with Chelsea until 2023 and joined Besiktas on loan for the 2021-22 campaign.
Batshuayi, who joined the Blues in 2016, has spent much of his time at Chelsea on loan.
He thrived with Borussia Dortmund in 2018, but struggled at Valencia the following season, moving temporarily to Crystal Palace for the second half of 2018-19.
The Belgian striker was a target for Palace in the next transfer window, but remained at Chelsea. He made 24 appearances, although few of them were starts, scoring seven goals.
Batshuayi returned to Selhurst Park last season but only scored two goals in 18 Premier League appearances for the Eagles.
The 27-year-old had entered the final year of his contract with Chelsea, but that has now been renewed, with an immediate one-season loan to Turkish champions Besiktas confirmed on Wednesday.
“Very, very happy to join Besiktas,” tweeted Batshuayi, who received a warm welcome upon his arrival in Istanbul.
“An incredible opportunity for me and I’m already looking to play. Thanks to all the fans for the crazy welcome in Istanbul. See you soon at the stadium.”
Batshuayi slipped lower in the pecking order at Chelsea on the arrival of compatriot Romelu Lukaku, who joined the European champions on a £ 97.5million (115million ‘euros) with Serie A champions Inter last week.
He is the third center-forward to leave the club this transfer window, Chelsea having sold Olivier Giroud to Milan, while Tammy Abraham was unveiled as a Roma player on Tuesday.
Thomas Tuchel still has plenty of high-quality attacking options at his disposal, with Lukaku leading a forward row that also includes Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic, with the support of midfielders Mason Mount, Hakim Ziyech and Callum Hudson-Odoi.
