announces new consultations before the already contested presidential election

The Congolese government announced that a hearing was held in Madingoud in November to prepare for the March 2021 presidential election, according to the constitutional calendar. But it is already provoking reactions from the opposition, which seems to be challenging the terms of its organization.

as reported from Brazzaville, Loïcia Martial

It was the Minister of the Interior and Decentralization Raymond Mboulou who made this announcement in front of several leaders of political parties. The number of participants will be very limited for reasons he has put forward. “Given the economic difficulties we are experiencing and due to the coronavirus pandemic, participation will be made by political groups and according to the election weight,” declared Mr. Mboulou.

“It’s more of a ritual than a consultation”

The announcement of this hearing did not leave indifferent Claudine Munari, president of the Congolese opposition federation. “It will only be the fifth session of elections that always ends in the same way, that is, they are not credible and contested. It is more of a ritual than a consultation. In fact, it is the ritual before the election, ”she said.

For his part, Anatole Limbongo Ngoka, leader of the African Party for Integrated and Solidarity Development (Paradise, Opposition), does not expect much. “I suspect that even if there are conclusions, they will not have much institutional significance. The consultations! There are a lot, but in general it does not lead to much, ”he remarked.

The 2021 presidential election will take place at least 30 days before April 16, marking the end of the presidential term.
