power outages make life difficult for small businesses in Kinshasa

The National Electricity Company justified the prolonged power outages by power outages at Inga hydropower dams in recent months. Repairs are underway, but while waiting in the neighborhoods, liquor is being heated. The impact on small businesses is huge.

as reported from Kinshasa, Sonia Rolley

“Here it is dark, there is no electricity”. In an internet café in the lively Matonge district of Kinshasa, an old generator is running at full speed at the entrance: “We harvest a little, but we spend a lot on just buying fuel. Without electricity we do not earn anything ”.

The power goes bad with Snel

The manager of the cybercafe confirms and turns to the National Electricity Company: “Fast passes at any time, even if there is no electricity. And it comes with savings to cut the power if we have not complied with a bill. Even if there is no electricity, they will ask you to pay the bill ”.

There is a repairman on the steps struggling with a printer and a young unemployed candidate who wants to try his luck in the lottery to get a green card and go live in the US: “It really hinders activities because everything works with electricity. If there is no electricity, even the cybercafe will not work well. To go elsewhere, I have never seen Europe or the United States, there is permanent electricity ”.

The cybercafe next door is closed. Probably because of the electricity problems, explains a neighbor.
