That is the feeling in Niger after the fire in the school in the Dutch district of Niamey on 13 April. A school and a kindergarten in the middle of a shopping field where many heavy trucks circulate. After the funeral of the 20 children who were killed in the accident, it is time for anger and questions. Parents and teachers’ organizations want light to be shed on the causes of the fire.
With our Niamey correspondent, Moussa Kaka
The twenty small school children from the Dutch school (of which 19 from the preschool) were buried last night, Wednesday, with great emotion.
The National Vice President of the Parent Office, Wissillimane Ransarantane, does not ridicule his words:
“Life is sacred and the end must be protected. And we, as parents, will no longer be able to tolerate such conditions that our children continue to suffer and make us cry ”.
Come to support his colleagues Mounkaïla Halidou from the Syndicate of Contractual Teachers, who describe this drama as never before seen in Niger. “Let’s build twenty-five classrooms, in an alley … An alley of less than 15 meters, 25 classes! It is nevertheless unacceptable, at a time when people are advocating the quality of education, when we make ourselves believe that we have finished with hut classes in the city of Niamey … “
After the judicial police have passed in the field, they eagerly await the results of the investigation. Heads must fall, according to a representative of the basic teachers. “It is really unfortunate … We, as basic teachers’ associations, ask that an investigation be carried out to locate the areas of responsibility.”
Contrary to what was conveyed on social networks, no teacher died in the fire that destroyed the entire kindergarten and part of the expansion of the Dutch primary school in Niamey.
