In a significant cultural milestone, around 2,000 artifacts acquired during the colonial era will soon be returned to Ghana, as announced at the Next Steps Conference on Reparatory Justice and Restitution held in Accra. The Dutch and German ambassadors presented President John Dramani Mahama with a detailed catalogue of the items scheduled for repatriation.
Addressing an audience of delegates from over 80 nations, Mahama highlighted the Ghanaian-sponsored UN resolution focused on the enduring impact of slavery, emphasizing its ongoing effects on Africa, the Caribbean, and global diasporas.
During the conference, the German ambassador remarked that this repatriation demonstrates his nation’s commitment to confronting its colonial history and strengthening its relationship with Ghana. In parallel, the Dutch representative underscored the significance of the artifacts, characterizing them as essential components of identity for Ghanaian communities, rather than mere exhibits for museums.
