Mogadishu (AX) — Somalia’s election timetable shifted Sunday after the Independent National Electoral and Boundaries Commission delayed planned votes for the Galmudug Regional State Council and House of Representatives, along with the selection of local council commissioners in Banadir region.
The commission said in a statement that the postponement came after talks with political parties, consideration of formal requests submitted to the body, and a review of remaining preparations needed before voting can proceed.
The Galmudug Regional Council and House of Representatives elections, which had been set for July 20, will now take place on July 25, 2026, the commission said.
Officials said the extra time is intended to help finalize technical and administrative arrangements ahead of the polls.
For Banadir districts, the commission said the timetable for electing local council commissioners will be reconsidered after further assessment of preparations and the results of consultations with political parties.
The commission urged political organizations to submit candidate lists without delay, saying prompt submissions would help move the process forward.
It also called on the Ministry of Interior to speed up training and civic awareness efforts for newly elected local council members, so they are ready to assume their responsibilities.
The electoral commission appealed to all stakeholders to maintain cooperation and help ensure the process is carried out in line with the law.
