Mozambique President Chapo Praises Rwanda’s Role in Cabo Delgado Security

In a pointed show of support for a key ally on the battlefield, President Daniel Chapo has lauded the role of Rwandan forces in Mozambique’s campaign against militants in Cabo Delgado province. Visiting the Rwandan troops’ headquarters, Chapo said Rwanda has been instrumental in safeguarding civilians and helping to stabilize the country’s northern province, according to a statement by the Rwanda Defence Force.

Rwanda began deploying troops to Cabo Delgado in 2021 as Mozambique and its partners sought to push back militants linked to the Islamic State group. The conflict has killed thousands, forced hundreds of thousands of civilians from their homes, and rattled economic activity in the gas-rich province, where insecurity has repeatedly undermined normal life and development.
