Mogadishu (AX) — Somalia marked a symbolic milestone on Tuesday as President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud inaugurated the newly built headquarters of the Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation in Mogadishu.
The opening ceremony drew a wide cross-section of the country’s leadership, including Interior Minister Ali Yusuf Ali Hosh, Cabinet ministers, lawmakers from both houses of Parliament, ambassadors, representatives of international partners and members of the public.
Officials said the reopening signals another important advance in the effort to rebuild and modernize Somalia’s state institutions.
For years, the Ministry of Interior had been working out of temporary facilities since the start of the Third Republic.
The new headquarters is meant to give the ministry the space and capacity it needs to carry out core duties in federal affairs, reconciliation, local governance and public service delivery.
At the same ceremony, President Hassan Sheikh also placed the foundation stone for a future headquarters of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.
According to officials, the planned complex will feature modern offices, meeting and training halls, as well as green spaces intended to support environmental conservation.
The new building is expected to enhance the ministry’s work on environmental protection, climate change response and coordination with national and international partners.
Both projects fit into Somalia’s broader push to restore key government institutions and widen access to public services after decades of conflict and institutional collapse.
