Mogadishu (Axadle) – Four years have passed since President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud selected Hamza Abdi Barre to lead Somalia’s government, a tenure that has become one of the most enduring and politically stable partnerships between a Somali president and prime minister in recent history.
On June 15, 2022, President Hassan Sheikh formally appointed Hamza Abdi Barre as Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, making him the country’s 21st prime minister since the creation of the Transitional Federal Government.

Backed by the President, Hamza quickly moved to establish the Dan-Qaran (National Interest) administration. Over the past four years, he has played a central role in advancing government priorities, particularly efforts aimed at improving security, strengthening state institutions, and supporting military operations against Al-Shabaab across several regions of the country.
His administration has also been closely involved in major national initiatives, including Somalia’s debt-relief program, campaigns to remove the long-standing arms embargo, the review of the provisional constitution, and strategies tied to the development of the country’s natural resources, including oil exploration and drilling projects.
Political observers frequently highlight the working relationship between President Hassan Sheikh and Prime Minister Hamza as one of the administration’s defining features. Their cooperation has stood in contrast to earlier periods of Somali politics, when tensions and power struggles between senior leaders often dominated the political landscape.
That close coordination between Villa Somalia and the Prime Minister’s Office has helped maintain a level of political stability that many previous governments struggled to achieve. It has also reduced the disputes that in past years frequently resulted in short-lived administrations and repeated government reshuffles.
As a result, Hamza Abdi Barre’s four-year period in office is widely regarded as one of the most stable eras in the modern relationship between a Somali president and prime minister, marking a notable chapter in the country’s recent political history.
