Somalia Declares Bid for Seat on African Union’s Security Council
Somalia has announced its candidacy for a seat on the African Union Peace and Security Council (AU PSC) for the 2025–2028 terms.
In a press release issued over the weekend, Somalia outlined key reasons for its candidacy, emphasising its ”leadership in regional and continental priorities.”
Somalia stressed the need for “fair representation,” noting its absence from the AU PSC since its creation in 2004.
The country argued that its “inclusion is vital for ensuring equitable representation within the organisation.
Somalia also highlighted the “strategic synergy” between its future role on the United Nations Security Council (2025–2026) and the African Union, emphasising its “legacy of leadership,” referencing its historical contributions to Pan-Africanism and support for liberation movements across Africa.
The country also aims to contribute to “enhancing AU peacekeeping missions,” drawing on its own experiences.
This announcement followed Ethiopia’s bid for an AU PSC seat, with foreign minister, Gedion Timothewos, revealing the country’s candidacy for the 2025–2027 term in December 2024
As nations ponder these candidacies, what emerges is a refreshingly earnest quest for a more balanced representation—a notion as appealing as the first rains after a long dry spell. And perhaps, just perhaps, we’re witnessing the dawn of a new chapter in which Somalia, with its rich historical tapestry and vault of grassroots experience, lends its voice to a larger, continental narrative.
So why not lean back and watch this bandwagon unfold? After all, they say the road to a thousand miles begins with a single step. Somalia just seems ready to lace up its running shoes.
