Somali Ministry of Education announces scholarships for Sudanese students

In Mogadishu, a fresh chapter of camaraderie opened as Somalia’s Ministry of Education, Culture, and Higher Education unveiled scholarship opportunities for 30 students from Sudan eager to pursue academic goals in Somalia.

Tuesday’s announcement shed light on the historical bond between Sudan and Somalia, highlighting Sudan’s generous past support during times when Somalia found itself without a functional government. “

Sudan stands out as a steadfast ally, one of those unforgettable supporters,” expressed the Ministry, acknowledging the scholarships provided by Sudan during Somalia’s governmental void.

This initiative is woven into Somalia’s broader vision of deepening educational and cultural ties with the Republic of Sudan.

Receiving the news with open arms, the Somali Embassy in Khartoum commended this gesture, emphasizing its significance for the Sudanese community caught in tumultuous times. “An essential gesture from Somalis, standing with their Sudanese kin,” echoed the embassy, as universities in Sudan shut their doors amidst conflict, leaving countless education dreams in the lurch.”

The civil war, sparking last year in Sudan, has transformed into a dire humanitarian crisis. The staggering death toll, claimed by medics, is anywhere between 20,000 and 150,000 lives lost. Further adding to the despair, over two million perished in the preceding conflicts in South Sudan and Darfur. Since April 2023, over 7 million Sudanese, uprooted from their homes, face the desert’s harsh wrath, their plight crying out for global attention.
