In Mogadishu, Saturday saw a noteworthy tête-à-tête at Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi welcomed Chinese Ambassador Wang Yu. They focused on nurturing the diplomatic bonds between their two nations.

Ambassador Wang Yu launched into a round of applause for Minister Fiqi’s stalwart defense of Somali sovereignty. He pledged China’s unwavering backing for Somalia’s independence and unity. The ambassador also spotlighted the decade-long presence of China’s embassy in Somalia, coinciding with Somali Flag Day celebrations—quite a momentous occasion indeed.
Minister Fiqi lauded the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit as a smashing success. This event clearly gave a turbo boost to Somali-Chinese relations. Both parties cheerfully concluded to crank up their collaboration across various fields.
The backdrop to all this was the FOCAC Summit in Beijing from September 4th to 6th, a gathering of continental significance. Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud joined other African bigwigs to chat about deepening ties and kickstarting modernization amid the lingering shadow of the pandemic.
