Malagasy Minister for Public Health Hanitrala Jean Louis Rakotovao announced on Thursday, April 22, that the first doses of vaccines, ordered by the government, would arrive on the island within two weeks.

as reported from Antananarivo, Laure Verneau

The health ministers did not specify the number or doses of vaccines that would come to the island first. Covishield, Sinopharm, Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson are the four types of vaccines selected this week by the executive at the suggestion of the Malagasy National Academy of Medicine to combat the pandemic and especially against the South African variant. The state is working on a vaccination campaign, the Malagasy Minister of Public Health Hanitrala Jean Louis Rakotovao explained on Thursday night.

The vaccines first go to healthcare professionals, law enforcement and the most vulnerable, ie. older. Registrations are possible from next week. There will also be a prioritization of vaccines for the most affected regions according to the equipment available for dose conservation.

The Minister of Health mentioned a vaccination for the public in July, when the doses at the Covax facility, which Madagascar agreed to in early April, would come. The country had 33,600 cases on Thursday, April 22 for 569 deaths, according to official figures.
