The United States expresses ‘deep concern’ over election deaths in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The United States has warned of a dead end in Somalia amid ongoing stalemate ahead of the election, which was caused by the failure to implement the September agreement signed in Mogadishu.

For several months, the federal government in Somalia has failed to hold elections despite the constitutional dispensation dictating that the current government’s term expires after four years.

In a stern warning on Friday, the United States said it was concerned about the country’s security and stability, adding that there was an urgent need for the Horn of Africa to reconcile with the case, arguing it was time to move on. .

“The United States is deeply concerned about the death toll in Somalia, creating political insecurity that threatens security, stability and development in the country,” the statement said.

“We urge Somalia’s federal leaders and member states to set narrow political goals, maintain their accountability to the people of Somalia, and agree to hold transparent and inclusive elections immediately.”

There have been efforts to unite the country for several months now, but no one has been successful, which has given rise to concern over the next step in the country, which has been at hand with unrest for several months now.

The violence, the United States adds, could affect the current political landscape in the country, adding that Somalia has no choice but to hold long-delayed parliamentary and presidential elections.

“The current dead end is undermining progress so far, delaying reforms that are urgently needed for Somalia to continue on the path to full debt relief and preventing the fight against terrorism. The United States supports the right of Somali citizens to protest peacefully and strongly opposes the use of violence from any party, ”the statement added.

“We urge Somalia’s leaders to protect the country’s future and find an agreement to hold parliamentary and presidential elections immediately.”
