Trump Responds to Major Drone Strike on Ukraine by Renewing Calls for Russian Sanctions

In a recent statement, US President Donald Trump expressed his deep concern over Russia’s ongoing aggression, declaring that leaders in Moscow appear intent on “keeping on with the killing.” His comments followed Russia’s unprecedented drone and missile assault on Ukraine.

During a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump conveyed his dissatisfaction, stating, “He wants to go all the way; just keep killing people. It’s no good.” Moreover, he noted that the two leaders discussed the possibility of sanctions extensively, remarking, “He understands that it may be coming.”

The call occurred just before hours of relentless Russian bombardment sent many Ukrainians rushing to take shelter. Despite the escalation, Ukrainian air defense systems worked tirelessly throughout the night to counter the onslaught.

Residents in Kyiv reported hearing drones overhead and explosions echoing across the city. Tymur, a local who has previously experienced Russian attacks, described the intensity of this latest assault: “Nothing like this attack had ever happened before. There have never been so many explosions,” he shared.

In response to the crisis, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the series of large-scale drone and missile strikes, emphasizing the need for immediate action. “The Secretary-General strongly condemns the latest series of large-scale attacks by the Russian Federation,” he stated, calling for a full, immediate, and unconditional ceasefire.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky characterized his recent dialogue with Trump as the “most productive yet.” He expressed gratitude for the discussions, particularly regarding air defense, noting, “The Patriot system is precisely the key to protection against ballistic threats.” Zelensky emphasized that several significant issues were tackled, and further collaboration is anticipated in upcoming meetings.

Both leaders reiterated their commitment to enhancing Ukraine’s defenses. Zelensky shared on social media, “We spoke about opportunities in air defense and agreed that we will work together to strengthen the protection of our skies.” Trump further elaborated to reporters aboard Air Force One about the potential for sending Patriot air defense missiles to support Kyiv.

This comes at a time when the US has announced a reduction in some aid deliveries to Ukraine. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted this as a crucial moment for the European Union to “step up” its support for Ukraine.

In the midst of the escalations, Ukraine has intensified its counterstrikes, with reports emerging of casualties in Russia due to a drone attack. Efforts led by the United States to broker a ceasefire have encountered obstacles, as delegations from both nations haven’t convened in over a month. Notably, Russia did announce a new prisoner exchange agreement with Ukraine yesterday, continuing the dialogue on this front.

As the situation develops, the global community remains on alert, reflecting on the words of President Trump: a call for accountability and action is more necessary than ever.
