Algerian researchers must have access to the archives of Algeria kept in France by Abdelmajid Chikhi, Director General of the Algerian National Archives. The latter requires the opening of archives on both sides of the Mediterranean.

Abdelmajid Chikhi was a guest on Monday on the Qatari channel Al-Jazeera in a program about the memory of colonization. With him on the set, the French historian and author of the report on the reconciliation of memories, Benjamin Stora was also invited to this program.

However, the director of the Algerian National Archives did not want to comment on the content of the Stora report: “I have no assessment to make regarding the Stora report. I think this is a French report that the French President is asking for from a citizen so that he can give him an opinion on what he calls the peaceful mind or memory. It is therefore a French deal. We have not been officially informed of the contents of this report, so we are obliged, even morally, to respond to it. So officially this report is not available to us. ”

“Most of our history is in French archives”

He urges his side to have access to French archives on Algeria: “But when it comes to memory and history, the topics on the Algerian street are mentioned, just as among scientists and politicians, President Tebboune has mentioned this on several occasions, he said the people should know their whole history, we want to restore the historical truth, but how to get there when most of our history is in French archives and in other foreign archives! ”
