In a pivotal move, Somalia officially joined the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Monday during the General Conference held in Vienna.
The Somali government heralded this membership as a remarkable achievement, underscoring the nation’s commitment to fostering the peaceful application of nuclear technology.
“This is a watershed moment for our nation, showcasing our unwavering dedication to peaceful nuclear interactions and sustainable progress,” the Somali prime minister’s office commented in a poignant statement issued Monday.
Somali Information Minister, Daud Aweis, expressed optimism about this new chapter, stating, “As part of the UN’s nuclear watchdog, Somalia is eager to collaborate with the global community. We aim to leverage nuclear technology for our national advantage while upholding the highest standards of safety and security.”
Minister Aweis affirmed Somalia’s ambition to responsibly harness nuclear energy to bolster sustainable development and enhance the standard of living for its citizens.
On this monumental occasion, Somalia becomes the 179th nation to join the ranks of the UN nuclear watchdog.
