Kenya Heightens Security Following Al-Shabaab Warnings
NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenyan authorities are on high alert due to fresh threats from Al-Shabaab. The Somali National Army (SNA) has been conducting a rigorous security crackdown, causing the militant group to lose foothold in their own territory.
Given that Kenyan troops are part of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), Al-Shabaab has consistently targeted the nation. Attacks have been particularly frequent in Nairobi and northeastern regions.
Resila Onyango, spokesperson for the National Police Service, assured the public of increased safety measures in light of credible threats from Al-Shabaab. The militant group is also reportedly planning attacks in other parts of East Africa.
Onyango, in a statement issued over the weekend from Nairobi, confirmed that police officers are on high alert. Kenya has seen a surge in terror threats from Al-Shabaab, making vigilance a necessity.
She urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement by reporting any suspicious activities or individuals. Police have been instructed to stay vigilant, especially in strategic locations, to prevent potential terror activities.
“The National Police Service is collaborating closely with other security agencies at national, regional, and international levels, while also engaging the public through intelligence-led policing,” said Onyango.
Both the United States and the United Kingdom have issued warnings to their citizens about the possibility of Al-Shabaab attacks in Kenya. Tourists have been advised to stay alert for potential kidnappings and attacks.
The US emphasized the need for its citizens to remain vigilant and adjust their security plans accordingly, warning that terrorist groups might strike with little or no prior warning. Over the past two years, Al-Shabaab has lost control of several strategic towns in Somalia.
