Jarriban (Horn Observer + Lamaane.net) – A gunman killed Jarriban District Police Commissioner Guled Katleye on Wednesday evening, July 15, in Somalia’s Mudug region, striking at an officer authorities say had stepped up efforts against illegal firearms and suspected piracy networks in the area.
Local security officials said a young armed man believed to be linked to a pirate group fatally shot the commissioner. Preliminary information from authorities indicates the suspect was associated with a militia previously accused of taking part in an attack on the district prison in Gara’ad, in the Mudug region. Officials have not said whether the suspect is in custody, and the investigation is continuing.
A Puntland State resident told Lamaane News Network that Katleye belonged to a younger generation of police officers whose work to bolster security had earned broad public backing in Jarriban. “He was respected across the district because he actively confronted illegal weapons and individuals involved in criminal activity,” the resident said, requesting anonymity because of concerns about the continuing investigation.
A local security official, speaking on condition of attribution because the inquiry remains active, said personnel were collecting evidence at the scene and had launched a search for the suspect. Additional patrols were sent across Jarriban after the shooting to reassure the public and deter any further security incidents, the official added.
Witnesses said officers moved quickly to secure roads leading to government buildings after the attack. As word of the commissioner’s death swept through the town, residents assembled near the district police station and administrative offices. Business activity slowed in parts of Jarriban that evening while security forces maintained a heightened presence.
Katleye had recently expanded operations aimed at curbing the flow of illegal firearms and confronting suspected pirate groups active in parts of Puntland State’s coastal areas. Residents credited the campaign with helping improve security in Jarriban. The work also reflected the Puntland State State of Somalia of Somalia’s security agenda under Said Abdullahi Deni, which emphasizes public safety, the dismantling of organized criminal networks and enforcement of the rule of law.
The commissioner’s killing underscores the persistent security pressures facing parts of the Mudug region despite sustained police operations. Security analysts say attacks on senior officers can hamper law-enforcement campaigns and weaken public trust in security institutions, especially in areas where authorities are still battling armed criminal organizations.
Authorities have disclosed no further information about the motive, while no person or group has publicly claimed responsibility. Officials said they would release additional details as investigators pursue their inquiry into the killing of the Jarriban District Police Commissioner.
