Arsenal Squander Opportunity to Lead, While Aston Villa Clinch Another Victory and Saints Falter
Arsenal had a golden opportunity to claim the Premier League’s top spot but stumbled against Bournemouth, losing 2-0 on a challenging Saturday night.
Missing Bukayo Saka due to injury, Arsenal played most of the match with just 10 players after William Saliba was sent off for a professional foul following a risky pass from Leandro Trossard.
Although Mikel Arteta’s squad initially resisted, Bournemouth’s Ryan Christie broke through in the 70th minute from a corner, and Justin Kluivert sealed the victory with a penalty in the 79th minute after David Raya fouled Evanilson.
As a result, Liverpool and Manchester City have the opportunity to extend their lead over Arsenal when they face their opponents on Sunday.
Fulham experienced a string of misfortunes, falling 3-1 at home against Aston Villa.
Early on, Raul Jimenez gave Mauro Silva’s side the lead, but shortly afterward, Morgan Rogers equalized for Villa with a deflected strike.
Things seemed favorable for Fulham when a penalty was awarded for Matty Cash’s handball, yet Emilio Martinez thwarted Andreas Pereira’s weak attempt.
Ollie Watkins then propelled Villa ahead with a forceful header, and Fulham’s troubles deepened as Joachim Andersen received a red card and Issa Diop accidentally turned the ball into his own net, providing Villa’s third goal.
West Ham’s coach, Julen Lopetegui, faced mounting criticism after his team crumbled to a 4-1 defeat at Tottenham.
Initially, Mohammed Kudus had given West Ham an early advantage, but Dejan Kulusevski evened the score assisted by James Maddison.
Soon after halftime, West Ham collapsed spectacularly, as Yves Bissouma netted a smoothly executed goal for Spurs.
Amidst defensive chaos, a saved shot from Destiny Udogie bizarrely resulted in an own goal as it deflected off Jean-Clair Todibo, followed by Son Heung-Min cementing the victory.
The situation worsened as Kudus received a red within minutes of the final whistle.
Erik ten Hag breathed a sigh of relief as goals by Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund ensured Manchester United turned their 1-0 halftime deficit into a 2-1 victory against Brentford, overturning Ethan Pinnock’s opening header.
Meanwhile, Brighton edged out Newcastle with a 1-0 win thanks to Danny Welbeck’s pre-halftime strike, launching them to fifth place.
Newcastle controlled much of the possession and generated numerous chances but squandered them, allowing the seasoned Welbeck to find the net once more, despite later leaving the field injured.
Southampton endured a calamitous day, squandering a 2-0 lead to ultimately fall 3-2 to Leicester City on home turf.
Under Russel Martin, Southampton initially excelled, achieving a two-goal advantage within the first half-hour courtesy of Cameron Archer and Joe Aribo, only to unravel as Leicester’s Facundo Buonanotte initiated a comeback.
Jamie Vardy equalized via a penalty, and with Leicester in complete command, Jordan Ayew clinched the match victoriously during overtime.
Everton savored a decisive victory over Ipswich Town; Iliman Ndiaye struck in the 17th minute, with Michael Keane doubling the lead shortly before halftime, leaving Ipswich fruitlessly hunting for their first triumph.
