MOGADISHU, Somalia – Outgoing President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo frustrates ongoing talks ahead of elections in the Afisiyooni Center within the Somali capital, Mogadishu, Northeastern State President Said Abdullahi Deni has told Voice of America Somali in the latest twist on the Horn of Africa.

Deni said Farmajo’s team was uncomfortable with some of the proposed agenda setting, which reportedly made him uncomfortable. He claimed that Villa Somalia was against discussion of the legitimacy of the current administration.

Legally, the government expired in Somalia’s mandate on February 8, leading to questions of legitimacy. In addition, Deni argued that the government was not prepared to have security events discussed as part of the agenda or even the presence of the international observers in the forthcoming talks.

“The president refused to talk about his mandate after February 8, the country’s security and how to run the election,” he told VOA, adding that he and other FMS leaders are, after all, ready to meet again with Farmajo to break the stalemate. and lead to Somalia for a peaceful election.

Northeastern State’s president further said Wednesday’s meeting ended with an understanding that the sides will hold further consultations before returning to the negotiating table. He admitted that the agenda had not been agreed, and accused Farmajo of not accepting their proposal.

“If the president does not want to talk about what happened after February 8, and does not raise questions about security responsibilities and wants to run the election the way he wants, what else can we talk about,” President Deni said.

Deni also claimed that the federal government statement and video from Minister Dubbe were prescribed and pre-recorded, a clear indication that Farmajo does not want the country to go to the polls.

Insiders say Farmajo only wants the implementation of the deal ahead of the Sept. 17 election and Baidoa recommendations to be reference points at the meeting and locks out proposals from Northeastern State, Jubaland and presidential candidates.

Deni and his Jubaland counterpart Ahmed Madobe had also put forward points, including past presidents, civil society, parliamentary leadership, who were invited to the opening of the next election rally to deliver their proposals.

The international partners were asked to be guarantors of the agreement, but they said they would be the only witness to the agreement. This Farmajo refused to include on the agenda.

Presidential candidates have already supported Jubaland’s and Northeastern State’s stance on the stalemate and have also blamed the federal government for allegedly withdrawing the process, even amid pressure from the international community.

“It is unfortunate that the national consultant in Afisyoni has collapsed. The conference was awaited by Somalis and the international community, this will have serious consequences for the country and its choices. Farmajo is responsible for the failure he would never have free + fair elections , “remarked Hussein Guled, a presidential candidate.

The Northeastern State president, who has been in Mogadishu for a month, has called on President Farmajo to be advised to avoid destroying the country in his hands, adding that they were ready for any solution to the election drag and move on.

Farmajo, whose four-year term expired on February 8, has been reluctant to compromise in Somalia’s interest and willing to govern the country beyond his constitutional mandate.
