The summer heat is underway which means it’s time to become reacquainted with your go-to summer drink orders.

Most of us would agree that on some of the hottest days, the first thing you want to do, whether on your commute to work during the week or en route to a walk around the park on the weekend, is pick up an ice-cold coffee drink. However, it’s really easy to overdo it on the calories first thing in the morning when you choose an iced or frozen coffee drink.

Toby Amidor, MS, RD, CDN, FAND award-winning nutrition expert and Wall Street Journal best-selling author of The Family Immune-Boosting Cookbook and member of our medical expert board tells us one of the worst coffee drinks you could buy this summer so you know exactly what to avoid. What is the worst coffee drink to have this summer?

“A Starbuck’s Venti White Chocolate Mocha Frappuccino with whole milk has a whopping 500 calories and 12 grams of artery-clogging saturated fat—which is 60% of the recommended daily max for the day,” says Amidor.

Think about it, the average adult requires about 2,000 calories a day, so sipping on this rich coffee beverage would cancel out one-quarter of the recommended daily intake—and that’s even before you’ve had breakfast or lunch!

“It also provides 76 grams of sugar and although a small amount is natural coming from the whole milk, the rest are from added sugars. This beverage is certainly one to skip but if you need a cooling drink, get your iced coffee but without all the bells and whistles,” says Amidor.

For context, the American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that men have no more than 9 teaspoons of added sugars (or 36 grams) a day and that women have no more than 6 teaspoons (25 grams) daily. With this beverage, you consume between two and three times the maximum amount of added sugars you should be eating each day to maintain good health.
