White House Announces JD Vance’s Wife to Travel to Greenland
Usha Vance, the wife of US Vice President JD Vance, is set to embark on a meaningful journey to Greenland this week, as confirmed by the White House. This autonomous Danish territory has garnered attention recently, particularly due to President Donald Trump’s expressed interest in its acquisition.
Ms. Vance will be in Greenland from Thursday to Saturday, accompanied by her son and a US delegation. Their itinerary includes exploring historical landmarks, immersing themselves in Greenlandic heritage, and enjoying the Avannaata Qimussersu, the national dogsled race of Greenland. “Ms. Vance and the delegation are excited to witness this monumental race and celebrate Greenlandic culture and unity,” the White House noted in its statement.
Since reclaiming the presidency in January, Mr. Trump has repeatedly advocated for US ownership of Greenland, even suggesting the possibility of using force to make such a claim. When questioned by White House reporters earlier this month regarding the takeover, Mr. Trump stated confidently, “I think it will happen.”
Trump advocates that the US should possess Greenland for its own security interests. However, polls indicate that a majority of Greenlanders favor independence from Denmark, rather than annexation by Washington. Interestingly, during his previous term from 2017 to 2021, Trump also floated the idea of purchasing Greenland from Denmark, but officials from both nations swiftly reiterated that the territory is not for sale.
As this visit unfolds, it will undoubtedly shed light on the unique cultural tapestry of Greenland while navigating geopolitical complexities.
