Judy Weinstein-Hagi, aged 70, and her husband Gadi Hagi, 72, were taken from their home in kibbutz Nir Oz during the harrowing Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. “Judy and Gad were murdered on October 7 and abducted to the Gaza Strip,” stated Mr. Netanyahu.

The Israeli Defense Forces reported that the bodies of this couple were retrieved during a specialized operation in the Khan Younis area of Gaza.

A representative from the kibbutz expressed profound relief and sorrow, stating, “After more than 600 days of pain and waiting, the bodies of Gad Hagi and Judy Weinstein Hagi were brought back home to the State of Israel and to Nir Oz last night in a military operation.”

Described as a music lover and an exceptional cook, Gad was deeply cherished alongside Judy, a former English teacher. Together, they raised four children and have seven grandchildren, according to community sources.

The family articulated their gratitude in the kibbutz’s statement: “We welcome the closure of this chapter following their return for a proper burial at home in Israel. We want to thank the military and security forces involved in the complex rescue operation, who have fought for us for over a year and a half. We are grateful to everyone who supported, prayed, and struggled for us and for the entire people of Israel.”

In the broader context, Israel has intensified its military actions in Gaza, aiming to dismantle Hamas in response to the autumn attack that triggered escalating tensions and conflict. Recent assessments indicate that over 1,218 individuals, primarily civilians, lost their lives as a result of the attack, according to an AFP tally derived from official statistics.

The health ministry in Hamas-governed Gaza reports at least 4,335 fatalities since Israel renewed its military offensive on March 18, bringing the overall toll to a staggering 54,607, with most victims also being civilians.

Of the 251 individuals initially taken hostage during the Hamas assault, 55 are still unaccounted for, with reports from the Israeli military indicating that 32 of those may have already perished.

In times of adversity, we often seek solace in community, unity, and remembrance. As we grapple with these events, we hold on to hope for peace and healing.
