Britney Spears allegedly drove erratically before arrest, police say

NEWBURY PARK, Calif. — Britney Spears was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence Wednesday night after California Highway Patrol officers received reports of a black BMW 430i traveling erratically at high speed on U.S. 101, authorities said.

The 44-year-old singer was taken into custody after she “showed signs of impairment and submitted to a series of field sobriety tests” during a traffic stop near the Borchard Road exit in Newbury Park at about 8:48 p.m., a CHP spokesperson said. Chemical test results are pending and the investigation remains open, the agency said.

Spears was booked into a local jail and released at around 6 a.m. Thursday, according to the CHP. No additional details about the traffic stop or potential charges were immediately available.

A representative for Spears called the incident “an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable,” adding that the pop star “is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life.”

“Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time,” the representative said. “Her boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well-being.”

Authorities said the initial 911 call to the CHP’s Ventura Communications Center described a vehicle matching Spears’ BMW driving at a high rate of speed on the southbound 101 near Borchard. Officers located the car shortly after the report and conducted the stop. The CHP did not release body camera footage or additional details about the field tests, and did not say whether anyone else was in the vehicle.

Spears, known worldwide for hits including “…Baby One More Time,” “Toxic,” “Gimme More” and “Oops!… I Did It Again,” has been under intense public scrutiny for much of her career. A court-ordered conservatorship that controlled her personal and financial decisions for 13 years was terminated in 2021. In recent months, she sold the rights to her back catalog to music publisher Primary Wave, part of a series of moves to restructure her business affairs following the conservatorship’s end.

Spears had a prior brush with the law on the road in 2007, avoiding a criminal hit-and-run trial by paying for damages after photographers captured her car making contact with another vehicle in a California parking lot.

The Wednesday arrest adds to ongoing questions around Spears’ well-being after a tumultuous period that has included highly publicized personal disputes and sporadic social media posts. Her representative’s statement, emphasizing family involvement and a plan for care, suggests those close to the performer may take a more active role in the coming weeks.

Authorities urged patience as the investigation proceeds, noting that toxicology findings and other evidence will determine whether prosecutors pursue charges. As of Thursday morning, no court date had been announced.

Spears, who rose to fame in the late 1990s as one of the era’s defining pop stars, has sold millions of records and won a Grammy Award. She has not released a full-length solo album since 2016, though she returned to the charts in 2022 with “Hold Me Closer,” a duet with Elton John, and has discussed potential future projects without announcing a formal comeback.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
