Tottenham honors the 1921 FA Cup final with a new jersey

Tottenham have announced an expansive campaign to celebrate the anniversary of the 1921 FA Cup final, in which the club played its iconic “cockerel” emblem for the first time ever.

April 23, 1921 was a watercourse day in Spurs history when they won the cup for the second time ever. The win served as a precursor to any success that would follow decades later and is still a defining moment in their 138-year history.

The anniversary just happens to come two days before a new final when they face Manchester City in the final of the EFL Cup on Sunday. The match will be used to celebrate the heroes of 1921, as the original cockerel design will be displayed on seating at Wembley.

The club also announced that they will produce a series of hundreds of shirts in limited editions that will be worn by the team at the season’s last home game against Aston Villa on 15 May.

A statement from Tottenham released on Friday reads: “Today is 100 years since Tottenham Hotspur first wore the now world-famous cockerel weapon on their shirts.

“The match was the FA Cup final in 1921 against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Stamford Bridge, where Jimmy Dimmock scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory.

“Legend has it that even though Spurs players started the match with cockerel jerseys, shirts became so muddy during the first half – which was briefly interrupted due to heavy rain – that they had to be changed to regular versions for the second half!”

The statement continues to tease a detail about their home jersey 2021/22 and says that it “pays homage to the original design” by showing the original cockerel on the inside of the shirt.

Leaked photos have shown that the kit will go retro with Nike choosing a simplified design – perhaps partly in honor of the usual white shirt that the team wore in 1921.
