But just 48 hours after the plans announced everything with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus currently the only sides that have not withdrawn.

Much has been made of how the six aforementioned English clubs will be “welcomed” back into the Premier League, after the FA initially threatened to ban them from competing at the highest level in England if they followed up on their Super League plans.

Liverpool owner John Henry has already been forced to issue a public apology to Reds fans for his part in the debacle, and now Arsenal’s CEO Venkatesham has begun his apology.

Telegraph’s Sam Wallace reports that the Gunners boss has had telephone conversations with managers of the 14 non-Super League clubs from the Premier League to apologize for his actions.

As might be expected, the sources described the conversations as “quite awkward”, although the feeling behind the apology was appreciated.

It is unclear whether Venkatesham is the only member of the six sides that has offered an olive branch to the rest of the league, although tough talks will undoubtedly have to take place in the coming days and weeks.

It remains to be seen what sanctions – if any – will be imposed on the so-called “big six”, where Premier League lawyers are reportedly investigating what measures should be taken.
