Man Utd Greenwood striker injured by Saints’ goal in St Mary’s draw

Mason Greenwood felt the Southampton goal should not have been cleared as Manchester United had to settle for a 1-1 draw at St Mary’s.

The Saints took the lead with what turned out to be a home goal from Fred after Che Adams’ shot deflected from midfield before going into the corner of the net at the half hour mark.

Greenwood equalized with his second Premier League goal in many games, but the Red Devils failed to create a winner.

Bruno Fernandes was furious that he didn’t get a free kick for a challenge from Jack Stephens ahead of the Saints’ first goal, but referee Craig Pawson and VAR saw nothing untoward.

Greenwood felt United had been roughed up.

The striker told the BBC’s match of the day: “I think it came through his back. I thought it was a foul but it’s the referee’s decision at the end of the day and we cannot dwell on it.

“I understand that they are going to let more challenges pass to keep the game going, which is a good idea, but if there is a foul, there is a foul.”
