Lyon women register 15 positive coronavirus tests in outbreaks

The coronavirus outbreak in Lyon Feminin has continued to spiral, with 15 positive tests now registered among players and staff at the reigning European champions.

The number of cases at the club has risen over a period of ten days since the first positive tests towards the end of last month. There were originally two cases within the first group, but it climbed four times on three occasions to take the figure to 14 before the latest announcement.

Lyon notes that all 15 individuals who have tested positive for coronavirus have been isolated according to protocol. The club also insists that it will take the best possible action and continue with daily tests to try to get the outbreak under control.

The return match in the Champions League quarter-final against domestic rivals Paris Saint-Germain was originally scheduled for April 1 but has instead been postponed until April 18.

The COVID-19 outbreak within the club and the risks of potential proliferation were the reason why forward Nikita Parris was left out of England’s squad for this month’s international against France and Canada. Catarina Macario was named to the USWNT squad but has since withdrawn.

Kadeisha Buchanan and Sara Bjork Gunnarsdottir are not in the current squads in Canada and Iceland, respectively, but Dzenifer Marozsan was called to Germany at the end of March and France coach Corinne Diacre still chose to name Eugenie Le Sommer, Amandine Henry and Sakina Karchaoui in their squad, despite protests from Lyon president Jean Michel Aulas.

But Wendie Renard, Amel Majri and Delphine Cascarino were left out of France.

Lyonnaises only contact but in the list of Blues against England and the United States @OL @FFF all this is not very prudent because the Lyonnais players are cases contacts, new cases declared here 31/03! Fit reasonably! https://t.co/g0mpszimeZ

Aulas accused Diacre and the French Football Federation of being ‘not very careful’ and tweeted that it is still not reasonable to call on Lyon players for international service.
