Fringe players probably destinations

Tottenham did not have a good season 2020/21, which barely scratched a seventh place in the Premier League.

Along the way, there were some rather dark moments, many – but not all – of which were Jose Mourinho’s works.

He’s gone now and the club is getting ready for the Nuno Espirito Santo era. Before these (hopefully) brighter days can begin, the club has plenty of dead wood to get out of the books. Below we have looked at where they are most likely to end up.

After a solid start, Davinson Sanchez has surprisingly returned during his time at Tottenham

With Christian Romero and a host of other defenders being persecuted, it may be time for the Colombian to move on. Sanchez is still young for his position at 25 years old and has shown signs of genuine talent in the past.

Still, you can not shake the feeling that he would fight to find a Premier League suitor. Maybe he should follow the example of Chris Smalling and Fikayo Tomori by going to Italy.

The stars can adapt to this move with Spurs open to include him in a deal that would get Romero to the club from Atalanta. Bergamo can fit well. Sanchez has the pace to hit Gian Piero Gasperini’s top line and he would also be treated in Champions League football this season.

Serge Aurier may have made some high-profile mistakes during his time at Spurs – more than a few actually – but the Ivorian has also had long-term reliability.

But with the club wanting to start a new era, it may be hot again, cold again Ivorians consider finding a new home. There are a couple of clubs that have been linked in the past, including the former Paris Saint-Germain side. However, it feels like a no-go now. Achraf Hakimi is probably a little better …

One door that remains open is Milan. The Serie A giants are tied for the Champions League this season and Aurier would give David Calabria competition on the right back.

Moussa Sissoko was once one of Spurs’ most dynamic midfielders, but in the last 18 months his form has declined significantly.

Now 31 years with two years left on his current contract, a stay in north London for another season would probably only delay his inevitable departure. He may not be a real elite player anymore – if he ever was – but he should be able to easily find another club.

Naples has been credited with an interest, but the story that has caught our eye is the one that links him to a move to Qatar.

Al-Duhail are eager to poach their second Spurs player, after Toby Alderweireld left earlier this week. Where Sissoko ends up depends on how he views his own career in the coming seasons.

Eric Dier quickly runs out of supporters in England. He endured the toughest season of his career last season and was a scapegoat for many of Spurs’ defensive shortcomings.

One man who always seemed to have his back was Jose Mourinho. Maybe the stage is ready for a gripping reunion – complete with lots of conversations in Portuguese – at Romans.

This is actually pretty good. Mourinho seems to have missed Granit Xhaka and although Dier has mainly played as a midfielder, he can also hit the defensive midfield if needed.

Hart has been on a downward spiral for some time / Yuri Kodrun / Getty Images

The decline of Joe Hart over the past four years has been one of the great mysteries of modern football.

Ever since Pep Guardiola embodied him seconds after moving down at Manchester Airport, he has been seriously fighting for form. Last season was also no different with Hart who failed to impress during a series of cameos.

Pierluigi Gollini’s arrival has pushed him further down the hacking order and if he is not content with becoming the third choice, he must move on.

Celtic is in desperate need of a goalkeeper and a move to Scotland may be just what Hart needs to revive his stagnant career. Even if it’s just a loan transfer, it makes sense.

In tragic news for good-looking and tidy midfield fans in north London, Harry Winks may also be on his way out of Tottenham this summer.

Although he experienced a slight resurgence when Ryan Mason was in charge at the end of last season, Winks has been a shared player at Spurs for some time.

However, his stock is still quite high, so he should be able to find a Premier League to take him. Everton, for example. Yes, he is very Everton.
