England 2-0 Germany: Euro 2020 player rating
Goals from Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane gave England a 2-0 victory over Germany on Tuesday night, as the Three Lions booked their place in Euro 2020’s last eight.
Both sides missed the opportunity to break the deadlock during the first period, with Timo Werner and Raheem Sterling forcing good saves, while Harry Kane got the ball off the toes of Mats Hummels in front of an empty net before the break.
Die Mannschaft seemed more likely to find the net after the interval, with Kai Havertz taking a fantastic stop out of Jordan Pickford, but it was Gareth Southgate’s men who struck more openly. Kane and Jack Grealsih were involved in a sweeping team move before Sterling (who else?) Finished Luke Shaw’s low post to put the Three Lions on 75 minutes.

After Thomas Muller passed a one-on-one opportunity to equalize, Kane was on hand to end his wait for a goal and double England’s lead with five minutes left. Grealish was on the ball in the area before squaring for the captain to nod into the net.
Southgate’s men kept the German pressure late and saw a historic 2-0 victory against Die Mannschaft to secure a place in the quarterfinals of Euro 2020.
Now, let’s get to the player’s rating …

Jordan Pickford (GK) – 8/10 – Looks so safe between the sticks in an England shirt. Made a great save for denying Werner in the first half and a sensational one for denying Havertz early in the second.
Kyle Walker (CB) – 8/10 – Brilliant alert for runners behind and any risks that come into the box. Got positions in the middle of the field to offer alternatives to teammates and regained possession really well by doing so, which helped start attacks and find well-threaded passes.
John Stones (CB) – 7/10 – Composed and comfortable when he meets his resistance and goes forward to nod possession and makes three tackles.
Harry Maguire (CB) – 7/10 – Had some looting runs to drive his side up and was usually stoic defensively. Bloody scary for attackers and dominated in the air.

Kieran Trippier (RWB) – 7/10 – Had some bright moments, looked to get in behind and delivered some quality from the wing with two important passes. He also took on his defensive duties well and stifled Robin Gosen’s effect. Worrying was brought with injury.
Declan Rice (CM) – 6/10 – Solid enough but did not really commit to push or sit deep enough and therefore got out of position a few times. Also quite tentative and dull on the forefoot.
Calvin Phillips (CM) – 7/10 – Put in several good challenges and press with great energy. Was good to see that he really aimed to make an offensive impact as well, making seekers pass behind and undulating forward to lock on balls.
Luke Shaw (LWB) – 7/10 – Decent defensive shift, which mostly stayed close to Joshua Kimmich and eventually provided the attacking production he needed – helped Sterling for the opening goal and was involved in the second.

Bukayo Saka (RW) – 7/10 – Got to drive around and did it with good effect. Light every time he picked up the ball and spun away from the defense without breaking the lines.
Harry Kane (ST) – 7/10 – Showed glimpses of why he topped the goal scorer and assist maps last season and finally got his goal, on his way home from close range.
Raheem Sterling (LW) – 8/10 – When he drove forward and increased the tempo, he really worried the Germans and made it count by starting and finishing a great move to hack the opener.
Jack Grealish (LW) – 8/10 – Came on and was immediately involved in the opening goal and fired it for Shaw to cross before helping the other.

Manuel Neuer (GK) – 5/10 – Forced a decent stop early but could not do anything about any of the goals.
Matthias Ginter (CB) – 5/10 – Withdrew from position on several occasions due to the agility of England and spun too easily once or twice.
Mats Hummels (CB) – 7/10 – Mostly alive to the danger, remains strong and solid all the time to make nine interventions – especially denying Kane a certain goal during the stoppage time in the first half.
Antonio Rudiger (CB) – 5/10 – Struggled to keep Saka and Trippier on the right side of England and allowed them too much joy.

Joshua Kimmich (RWB) – 6/10 – Could not really show his creative quality against England’s energetic press, but worried behind the line once or twice. Was not so comfortable trying to limit the threat from England’s left – where both goals came from.
Leon Goretzka (CM) – 6/10 – Made some excellent climbs forward and really disturbed his resistance as he turned and drove towards goal, but faded with time.
Toni Kroos (CM) – 6/10 – Drove quite well and rarely found time to choose a pass and really influence the procedure. Broke up the game brilliantly, but made five ball recoveries.
Robin Gosens (LWB) – 5/10 – Another fairly quiet viewing. Worried about England when he came into the box but did not do enough and often allowed too much space behind for Trippier to walk in.

Thomas Muller (RW) – 4/10 – Physically dominated by his opposite numbers and could not really make such a big impact. Sometimes found space and delivered some good through balls to their colleagues. Be clean through late and surprisingly expressed the broad – criminal.
Timo Werner (ST) – 6/10 – Always be on the last man’s shoulder and make some good runs behind. Was put through in half an hour and really should have beaten Pickford.
Kai Havertz (LW) – 7/10 – Found some really promising space pockets in and around the box when Germany managed to make attacks and seemed most likely to get something to happen for Germany. Almost found one of the goals of the tournament with a volley but was brilliantly denied by Pickford.
Serge Gnabry (ST) – 5/10
Emre Can (CB) – Not applicable
Leroy Sane (LW) – Not applicable
Jamal Musiala (RW) – N / A
