The meeting took place on Downing Street on Wednesday, April 14 – just four days before the revelation United had committed to join the breakaway competition – although sources have denied that the failed Super League was discussed.

United have since withdrawn their intention to take part in the Super League, along with the five other English clubs that had signed up for the event, Inter and Atletico Madrid.

Milan, Juventus and Barcelona have not yet retired, although the trio have released statements that the competition can not continue in its current format, while Real Madrid – whose president Florentino Perez would chair the Super League – remain committed.

Shortly after the Red Devils withdrew from the outbreak, Woodward announced that he would resign from his role at the club this summer, and The Independent now reports that the outgoing United boss met Johnson on Downing Street just days before the competition was revealed.

Sources deny that the Super League was raised during the discussion, claiming that the meeting was held with the intention of discussing issues “around COVID-19 restrictions and the return of fans to arenas”.

Although the timing of the meeting seems extremely temporary, reports have since emerged that Woodward was opposed to the Super League proposal, while another source provided a definitive answer when asked if the competition was discussed during Woodward’s meeting with Johnson and replied: League ”.

The fallout from the Super League saga continues to begin, and Premier League boss Richard Masters seems determined that the so-called ‘Big Six’ will be held accountable for their actions. It is understood that the FA is planning to change the Premier League rules so that future attempts to join a breakaway league will result in immediate expulsion from the league.
