Christmas Lopetegui rejects the lucrative offer from Tottenham

Sevilla president Jose Castro has claimed that Julen Lopetegui turned down a “dizzying” offer to become the new Tottenham boss.

Spurs’ search for a new manager has been ongoing since they divorced Jose Mourinho back in April, with chairman Daniel Levy initially claiming he wanted to book a time before the end of the season.

A whole host of names have been thrown into the mix as to who could replace Mourinho in north London, but still countless setbacks have left them without a manager when the countdown to the 2021/22 Premier League season begins.

In recent weeks alone, Paulo Fonseca and Gennaro Gattuso have been rumored to have been in talks with Levy over the leadership position, and Sevilla president Jose Castro has now revealed Julen Lopetegui has turned down the role.

Castro claimed that the Sevilla boss told him he had received a number of offers including an eye-watering proposal from Spurs, but said he was not tempted to switch La Liga to the Premier League.

“Christmas called me and told me. He said he had received offers he had not listened to in addition to a dizzying one from Tottenham,” he told Spanish radio station Cadena SER (via The Telegraph).

“But he said he does not forget things and that he is very motivated here. We believed and believe in him, which gives him a two-year contract extension, and I am sure he will give much more to the club.”

Castro went on to add that the Sevilla boss would not be tempted by a lucrative offer and that he is happy at the club.

“You see his ability and leadership every day,” he added. “Some coaches are driven more by economic factors but Christmas is very clear that he is happy here and he even said that it would be very difficult to find a better workplace than here.”
