In Burkina Faso, the number of people forced to flee violence is accelerating and reaching an unprecedented level, according to the Refugee Commission. The humanitarian organization reiterates its call for coordinated action for peace and stability in this country.
Together with RFI, Fatoumata Sinkoun Kaba, UNHCR Spokeswoman for Central and West Africa, reports a growing number of internally displaced people in Burkina Faso but also by people forced to take refuge in neighboring countries.
“The movement of the population of Burkina Faso as we see it today is unknown. We have managed 1.3 million for internally displaced persons. Their movement occurs in almost all regions where there are attacks. For example, in the first half of this year alone, we still had over 237,000 people forced to flee their homes. We also have a new phenomenon that is growing, that is, Burkinabè that crosses the border to go to neighboring countries to seek refuge. There are about 38,000, almost half of them in recent months. Burkinabè was not used to crossing the border. We have seen that the crisis has gradually worsened since 2015 and worsened, and it is now that we are seeing movements to neighboring countries – at the moment we have Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Niger, but also Benin – which are still signaling a deterioration in the security situation in Burkina. ”
Since 2015, Burkina Faso has been confronted with increasingly frequent and murderous jihadist attacks by the Islamic and Muslim Support Group, affiliated with al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (Aqmi) and the state group. Islamic in the Greater Sahara (EIGS).
